Hariyali Teej- Legend, Puja Offerings and Fasting Rules

Hariyali Teej is one of the most important Teej festivals celebrated by married or to -be-married women. The festival celebrates the sacred union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the beauty of nature during the monsoon. According to the Hindu calendar, Hariyali Teej is observed on the Tritiya (3rd day) of the Shukla paksha (bright fortnight of the moon) of Shravan month. Married and to -be-married women keep vrat for the welfare and longevity of their partners. Since the festival falls during the monsoon when there is greenery all around, it’s called Hariyali Teej.  In 2021, Hariyali Teej falls on 11th August (Wednesday).

Legend Behind Hariyali Teej

Legends in Hindu texts say that Parvati is a manifestation of Sati, Lord Shiva’s first wife. Lord Shiva was in a great state of sorrow after Sati sacrificed herself in protest of her father’s disliking for Lord Shiva. So it took Maa Sati 108 subsequent births to break the meditative state of Lord Shiva and make him accept her as his wife again. She took her 108th birth as Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati’s dedication is described as an inspiration to all married ladies. That’s why getting Maa Parvati’s blessings on Hariyali Teej is believed to bring continued marital bliss.
