Sweets are exchanged between the brothers and sisters after the puja and the brothers give gifts to their sisters as well.

In Maharashtra, this day is also known as Nariyal Purnima or Narali Purnima. On this day, coconut is offered to the seas or oceans to please the water deity Varun Dev. The festival of Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated every year for ages.  There are many mythological beliefs or stories about when it started. The mention of Raksha Bandhan is also found in our scriptures. It is also mentioned in Bhavishya Purana. According to Bhavishya Purana, once the war was going on between the gods and the demons. In this war, the demons were overpowering the gods. Devraj became very worried seeing this dire situation. At that time, Indrani entwined a silk thread and tied it to Devraj’s wrist. That day was the full moon day of the month of Shravan. With the effect of the thread tied by Indrani, Indra conquered the demons. Since then, the tradition of tying the thread of protection started, which is known as Raksha Bandhan.

There are many other stories related to Raksha Bandhan as well. One of these stories is related to the demon king Bali. Bali was a strong and powerful king. He pleased Lord Vishnu with his hard penance and took a promise from him to live in the Pataal Lok. Since then, King Bali started living in Pataal Lok only. Mata Lakshmi became worried because of Lord Vishnu’s stay there. At Devarshi Narada’s suggestion, Maa Lakshmi tied a protective thread on King Bali’s hand and made him her brother. After that, she brought Lord Vishnu back to Vaikuntha with her.
