Vamana Avatar Vrat Katha

Once upon a time, King Mahabali ruled the whole earth. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. King Mahabali was the grandson of Prahlad, so devotion to Lord Vishnu was innate in him. With his strength and power, he defeated Indra too. Lord Indra was frightened by the rule of Asuras in heaven and sought help from Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu took birth in the form of Vamana to sage Kashyap and Mata Aditi. When King Mahabali was performing the Ashwamedha Yagya in order to gain more power, claiming himself as the best, Lord Vamana reached there and asked for three steps of land. Shukracharya, the Guru of all the Asuras, who was also present there, asked King Bali not to promise anything. But, the King ignored and promised to give three steps of land to Vamana.

Then Lord Vamana took a huge form and measured the whole universe with one foot and the whole earth with the other. So with both legs, he snatched everything from King Bali. After this, in order to fulfill his promise, King Bali asked Lord Vamana to keep the third foot on him. When Vamana set foot on Bali’s head, he went to hell. However, seeing his devotion, Lord Vamana blessed him as the King of Hell. Also, Lord Vishnu allowed the subjects of the kingdom to stay there. It is believed that after this incident, King Bali comes to Earth once a year to meet his subjects. In South India, this festival is known as Onam.
