Kartik Amavasya 2023 is a festival that holds special significance in Hindu Mythology. It is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month as per the Hindu calendar. Kartik Amavasya is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and the auspicious festival of Diwali also falls on the day. Many devotees also perform Pitru Puja on this day to seek the blessings of their ancestors. Doing charity is considered very auspicious on this day. It’s a mythological belief that Lord Krishna himself talked about the significance of Kartik Amavasya on the occasion of Shanti Parva during Mahabharata. Devotees who worship Lord Krishna on this day can get rid of the malefic effects of planets like Rahu, Ketu, Shani or Mangal.

There are certain religious rituals that are performed on Kartik Amavasya. Following are the rituals in detail.

  • On the day of Kartik Amavasya, get up early in the morning and take a sacred bath in a river or a lake. Then offer Argh to Surya Dev and offer sesame seeds to the flowing water of the river or lake.
  • For Navagraha Shanti and to reduce the malefic impact of Navagraha in your life, recite Navagraha Stotra after taking bath.
  • Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama on this day is also considered very fruitful. It can help the devotees eliminate all the bad Yogas from their Kundli.
  • Lighting a lamp in the temple or in the house of the poor and needy also has great significance. It helps in the resolution of Horoscope Doshas related to Planet Saturn.
  • Offer flowers, sweets, fruits and kheer to Maa Lakshmi as Bhog.
  • Devotees should also perform Panchamrit Abhishek of Shivling on this day.

Significance of Lighting Lamps on Kartik Amavasya 2023

Kartik Amavasya falls on the day of Diwali, two days after Dhanteras. It is a traditional practice to light lamps on the day of Kartik Amavasya. Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya on this day after 14 long years of exile in the dense forests. Therefore, the people of Ayodhya decorated the entire city with oil lamps in honour of Lord Rama. The entire city looked like a city of lights when the Ayodhya residents welcomed Lord Rama and celebrated the moment with a lot of happiness and gaiety. Thus, this ritual has been carried forward and every year devotees light oil lamps on this auspicious day.

Another reason for lighting lamps on Kartik Amavasya is in honour of our forefathers. On this day, many devotees perform Shradh rituals in remembrance of their ancestors and it’s believed that our forefathers come to Earth and bless us with a happy and peaceful life. After concluding the Pitru Paksha rituals, devotees light lamps for their ancestors so that they don’t face any issues due to darkness while returning to the Pitru Loka. This ritualistic practice is most prevalent in West Bengal.

Worshipping Maa Tulsi on Kartik Amavasya 2023 holds special significance. Worshipping Maa Tulsi is said to bring the blessings of Lord Vishnu to the devotees too. On the day of Kartik Amavasya, water is offered to Maa Tulsi and Lord Surya after taking a holy bath. After that, both deities are worshipped. It is considered very auspicious to donate Tulsi plants on the day of Kartik Amavasya. Tulsi Puja helps the devotees in getting relief from chronic diseases, reduces sorrow and suffering and helps in having a smooth spiritual journey towards salvation.

Goddess Lakshmi once decided to visit the Earth on the new moon day of Kartik month. However, she struggled in finding directions properly since it was Amavasya and everything was dark around. Finally, she lost her way and wasn’t able to find the correct direction anymore. After a while, she suddenly spotted oil lamps on the path. She followed that direction and found a hut nearby. Then, she saw an old woman lighting lamps outside the hut. After lighting lamps in the front yard, the old lady moved to the backyard to light lamps. When she returned back, she saw Goddess Lakshmi. Maa Lakshmi requested the old woman to let her stay in the hut overnight. The old lady happily agreed and arranged a bed and other necessities for Maa Lakshmi so that she could rest peacefully. Goddess Lakshmi was extremely pleased by the old lady’s dedication.

The old lady then fell asleep while working. The next day, when the lady woke up, to her utter surprise, her small hut had been converted into a big house, similar to a royal palace. The house was filled with gold, money and food. She never faced a shortage of anything. The old lady couldn’t realise when Maa Lakshmi left her house. She then remembered and thanked Maa Lakshmi for her divine blessings. Goddess Lakshmi herself appeared in front of her and said that the Devotees who light lamps on Kartik Amavasya will always receive my blessings and all their wishes will be fulfilled. Since then, the tradition to worship Maa Lakshmi on Kartik Amavasya 2023 has begun. Devotees who perform this puja with full devotion are said to be blessed with health, wealth, wisdom, financial stability, love, care and affection from family members.
