Bhadrapada Purnima is referred to as the traditional Hindu calendar’s commemoration of ‘Purnima’ (full moon). Worshippers of Lord Satyanarayan, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, pay homage to him on this auspicious occasion. ‘Purattasi’ in the Tamil calendar and the months of September-October in the Gregorian calendar correlates to the Bhadrapada month which is the sixth month in the Hindu calendar. Bhadrapada Purnima is celebrated with cheerfulness and emotion all throughout India, notably in Gujarat. On this day, Gujarat’s Ambaji temple observes special festivities. In 2021, Bhadrapada Purnima falls on September 20, Monday.

Significance of Bhadrapada Purnima:

According to the Hindu calendar, there is an occurrence of one ‘Purnima’ (full moon day) and one ‘Amavasya’ (no moon day) in every Hindu lunar month. In the Hindu mythology the full moon night is associated with immense religious significance. The Bhadrapada month is dedicated to worshipping Lord Vishnu and therefore the Bhadrapada Purnima has lot of importance. The day after Bhadrapada Purnima marks the beginning of the Pitru Paksha Shraddha. According to the astronomical calculations, the Bhadrapada month derived its name owing to the fact that the eastern or northern Bhadrapad Nakshatra is formed in this month on the Purnima or full moon day. This day is also auspicious for performing Griha Pravesh ceremony. Bhadrapada Purnima is a sacred and special festival for Lord Vishnu followers. On this day devotees pray to Lord Satyanarayan with devotion to seek His blessings for a better life.

Purnima (a full moon day) and Amavasya (a non-moon day) occur every month according to the Hindu lunar calendar. In Hindu mythology, the full moon night carries a great deal of sacred significance for the Hindus. Lord Vishnu is worshipped throughout the month of Bhadrapada, therefore Bhadrapad Purnima holds great significance. The Pitru Paksha Shraddha begins the day after Bhadrapada Purnima. On the full moon day of that particular month, the eastern or northern Bhadrapada Nakshatra is created according to the astronomical calculations, thus the name Bhadrapada is derived owing to this fact. On this day, the Griha Pravesh ritual can be performed as it is deemed sacred. Lord Vishnu’s devotees celebrate Bhadrapada Purnima, as a holy and unique event. Devotees worship Lord Satyanarayan on this day in order to obtain His blessings for a happier existence.
