Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2023 Katha

According to the Legend, once Lord Vishnu decided to visit Lord Shiva when he was residing at Kashi. He collected 1000 lotus flowers from the Mansarovar since he wanted to offer it to the Shivling by taking 1000 names of Lord Shiva. Then Lord Vishnu reached Kashi and was greeted by Lord Shiva in a very warm manner. Then Lord Vishnu completed the ritual of chanting one name of Lord Shiva and offering one lotus flower to the Shivling. When Lord Vishnu was doing the process of the ritual with full devotion, Lord Shiva decided to test him. So he removed one flower offered by Lord Vishnu and hid it somewhere. When Lord Vishnu chanted the 1000th name of Lord Shiva and looked for the last flower to offer, he found that the flower was missing. Lord Vishnu is often called ‘Kamala Kanan’ i.e ‘lotus-eyed’ by his devotees.

So Lord Vishnu used his intellect and offered one of his eyes to the Shivling instead of the lotus flower. Lord Shiva was deeply touched by this devotion of Lord Vishnu, hugged him immediately and restored his eye too. Then Lord Shiva presented the Sudarshan Chakra to Lord Vishnu so that he could fight the evil enemies. Lord Shiva accepted Lord Vishnu as the commander and the protector of the Universe, the one who will sustain all the living and nonliving things in the world. Thus, on the day of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2023, both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped on the same day and the devotees observe the Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Upvas too. Some people even observe the Vrat from sunrise to sunset.
