Significance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya
In Hinduism, it is strongly and widely believed that a human being should repay 3 different kinds of debts or Rinas to lead a life full of happiness, without any obstacles or suffering. The 3 Rinas include the Deva Rina, Rishi Rina and Pitru Rina which are related to God, Guru and Ancestors respectively. It is generally considered the responsibility of the son to take care of his parents and serve them well when they are living and complete the duties of a good son by performing a Shradh properly after their demise. This is necessary for the departed souls to get freedom and attain moksha, otherwise, they wander as spirits on the earth. The significance of these rituals is mentioned in various types of Puranas such as the Vayu Purana, Garuda Purana, Agni Purana, Markandeya Purana and Matsya Purana.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2023 includes the obligations of the devotees to their 3 preceding generations and also to their gotra or mythical lineage ancestor. The names and Gotras of the dead ancestors are chanted during the Shradh rituals. In this way, a devotee gets to know the names of six generations (3 preceding generations, his own and 2 succeeding generations), thus reconfirming the lineage ties. The idea of lineage through blood is the main cause of performing this ritual. The current generation pays homage and respect to their dead ancestors which is considered very auspicious and beneficial.
