Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. During this festival, devotees worship Goddess Durga and her nine forms. According to the Hindu calendar, the Navratri festival commemorates the change of seasons. There are a total of four Navratris in a year. Among them, two are Gupta Navratri, along with Small and Big Navratri. Chaitra Navratri is regarded as the Big Navratri and is termed Badi Navratri. Chaitra Navratri holds all kinds of religious, scientific and social significance.

What is Chaitra Navratri?

The first day of Chaitra Navratri is the first day of the Hindu New Year. It is said that on this day, Lord Brahma created the universe. Also, the very first incarnation of Lord Vishnu took place during Chaitra Navratri. Furthermore, Chaitra Navratri is considered to be the beginning of the summer season. This year Chaitra Navratri starts on March 22, 2023.

Sacred Temples to Visit During Chaitra Navratri

Vaishno Devi Temple: Located in Jammu and Kashmir, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is believed that the goddess herself calls her devotees to visit the temple.

Shri Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur: One of the popular Shaktipeethas, it is said that the eyes of Maa Sati fell here and since then Mother Goddess has been seated here in the form of Mahalakshmi. In this region, Mother Goddess is also called Maa Ambabai. According to some inscriptions, this Temple is more than 7000 years old.
