Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha

It is said that Lord Krishna had narrated Ekadashi Vrat Kathas to Pandava King Yudhishthira to help him gain wisdom and enlightenment. And here’s the detail about Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha.

According to a legend, one day, Indra Dev was listening to Gandharva music and enjoying it with Pushpadanta and Chitrasen. Also, during this period, Pushpadanta’s daughter Pushpavati and Chitrasen’s wife Malini, son Pushpavan and grandson Malyavan were present in the court. After seeing Malyavan for the first time, Pushpavati fell in love. And so they continued to admire each other and distracted the musicians resulting in singing the wrong notes. Enraged by their behaviour, Indra Dev cursed Pushpavati and Malyavan to lose their abilities for disrespecting him. Due to the curse, Pushpavati and Malyavan lost their powers of being demigods, and they had to lead a normal human life on earth.

For many days, the duo endured the struggles and troubles of human life on earth. And therefore, to get rid of this curse, they observed a fast on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi Tithi of Magha, while sitting under a Peepal tree. Pleased by their dedication and devotion, Lord Vishnu relieved them from the curse and blessed them and therefore, they soon regained their lost abilities and powers.

Benefits of Observing Jaya/Bhishma Ekadashi

  • According to Padma Purana, Devotees performing the vrat will help to eliminate all sins and bad virtues.
  • Devotees observing the vrat will not reincarnate in Preta Yoni or will not turn into Pret Atma (ghost) after death or any other negative energies.
  • Gain victory over enemies.
  • All wishes are fulfilled.
  • Financial difficulties are resolved.
