Narada Jayanti is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth anniversary of Narada Muni, a great sage and devotee of Lord Vishnu. The festival is observed on the Purnima (full moon day) of the Hindu month of Vaishakha, which usually falls in May or June.

Narada Muni is considered a divine messenger and primary source of information among Gods, with the ability to travel across all Teen Loks, or the three worlds of heaven, earth, and the netherworld. He is believed to be the first journalist on Earth, constantly communicating information to maintain the balance of the universe.

Narada Muni is a revered figure in Hindu mythology and is known for his devotion, wisdom, and musical talents. He is believed to have spread the message of love and harmony through his songs and stories. On Narada Jayanti, Devotees offer prayers to Narada Muni and seek his blessings for knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment.

The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in some parts of India, particularly in the northern states. Devotees visit temples dedicated to Narada Muni, offer flowers, fruits, and sweets, and listen to devotional songs and hymns in his praise. Some people also observe fasts and perform charitable deeds on this day.

Generally, Narada Jayanti falls on the next day of Buddha Purnima.

Who Is Narada Muni?

According to Hindu mythology, Sage Narada is the Manas Putra of Lord Brahma, one of three Tridevas (Brahma the creator, Vishnu the nurturer, Mahesh the destroyer). Narada Muni is also known as the son of Maharishi Kashyap. Also, many consider him the incarnation of Saint Thyagaraja and Purandaradasa. Sage Narada is a great follower and devotee of Lord Narayan or Lord Vishnu. Devarshi has not married anyone and was a Brahmachari.

In Vishnu Purana and other Puranas, it is mentioned that Sage Narada is roaming all the places in three Lokas, Swarg Lok, Pataal Lok and Mrityu Lok Prithvi Lok (Earth). While travelling everywhere, he recites the name of Lord Vishnu and says Narayan, Narayan. He also has an important job on hand to guide the souls or Atma to Moksha, free from the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, Narada Jayanti 2023 is an important event in Hindu culture. On this day, people worship Sage Narada for his guidance and wisdom.

Legend of Sage Narada

Legend has it that Sage Narada was born as a Gandharva in his previous life, the son of a female worker who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. His mother worked at a household of sages and saints, who blessed Narada in recognition of his services and devotion. In time, Narada himself became a devout follower of Lord Vishnu.

After his mother’s passing, Narada retreated into the woods to meditate and seek solace. Impressed by his penance and devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before Narada and revealed his true spiritual form. Following his death in his previous life, Narada transformed into his divine form as Devarshi. This is why Hindu people celebrate Narada Jayanti, as it commemorates the day when Narada transformed into his divine form.

Let’s find the rituals to follow on Narada Jayanti.

Narada Jayanti – Rites and Rituals of the Day

To celebrate Narada Jayanti, devotees are advised to take an early morning bath in holy water and prepare for the puja. Since Sage Narada was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, an idol or picture of the God of the Universe is worshipped on this day. It is believed that the puja should be performed with a pure heart and mind. Devotees can offer tulsi, flowers, incense sticks, and a lamp to the Lord, followed by aarti.

On this day, it is also considered auspicious to visit Kashi Vishwanath and feed the Brahmans. Offering food to Brahmans is believed to bring blessings and good fortune.
