The Shani Shingnapur Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shani (Saturn) located in the village of Shingnapur in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India. The temple is famous for the fact that there is no idol or image of the deity in the temple, instead, there is a large black stone believed to be the manifestation of Lord Shani himself.

The exact history of the temple is unclear, but it is believed to be very old, with some estimates suggesting that it may be over 350 years old. According to local legends, the idol of Shani Dev here is Swayambhu and the Temple is believed to be Jagrut Devasthan. Once there was a flood in Shingnapur village when this Shani Dev’s idol got washed away in that flood and got stuck in a tree. When a shepherd tried to move the idol, the idol started bleeding. Seeing this, he got scared and immediately ran away in fear. But, that night Shani Dev appeared in his dream and told him that he has discovered his idol, which is his Swambhu form and this idol must be worshipped daily in order to keep the village protected.

Then the villagers performed Pran Pratistha of this Shila. Since then, Shingnapur is called Shani Shingnapur paying reverence to the name of Shani Dev. The fascinating fact about Shingnapur village is that there are no locks on any house here. It is believed that Shani Dev himself protects this village from all calamities, mishaps and thefts.

The temple gained prominence in the early 20th century when Shri Govindrao Adik, a local businessman and philanthropist, started promoting the temple and organizing regular pujas and other religious ceremonies at the temple. Since then, the temple has become one of the most popular Shani temples in India, attracting thousands of Devotees from all over the country.

In recent years, the temple has undergone significant renovation and expansion to accommodate the increasing number of Devotees. However, the unique tradition of not having any doors or locks in the houses in the village, including the temple, is still maintained. The villagers believe that Lord Shani protects them from theft and other crimes, and therefore, their houses are never locked. Surprisingly, there are very few instances of crime in the village.
