In India, the festival of Vishwakarma Jayanti, also known as Vishwakarma Puja, commemorates the birth of the Hindu deity Vishwakarma, who is revered as the world’s architect. Dwarka as well as the Maya Sabha for the Pandavas are said to have been built by Vishwakarma, the son of Lord Brahma. He is also credited for building numerous palaces and weapons for Hindu deities. ‘Swayambhu’, which signifies self-existence or to be formed by one’s own desire, was another popular name used for him. Vishwakarma Jayanti 2023 is celebrated every year in September or October. It falls on the day on which Surya Dev transits from the Leo zodiac (Simha Rashi) and enters into the zodiac sign Virgo (Kanya Rashi). Therefore, this festival is also known as Kanya Sankranti Diwas in many places.
This day is celebrated with a lot of joy and gaiety by architects, engineers and various skilled labourers such as factory workers, mechanics, industrial workers, merchants, smiths, craftsmen and welders. Vishwakarma Jayanti is highly revered by all the adherents of the Hindu religion. On this day, Lord Vishwakarma, the heavenly carpenter and architect of the cosmos, is honoured by the Hindus. The grandeur of Lord Vishwakarma’s accomplishments is mentioned in the Rig Veda and the Sthapatya Veda. When it comes to Vishwakarma Puja, it’s a big festival for the working community. All the prayers of the workers, for success in their particular fields, as well as for the smooth and safe functioning of various equipment, are addressed to Lord Vishwakarma on this day. On this day, workers also offer prayers to their tools, and all the offices remain closed for the day. Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrated with a sumptuous feast. Everyone, including the workers and owners, eat a meal together. On this day, kites are also flown in several places. Everybody attempts to cut each other’s kites with a very competitive attitude, and the sky takes on the appearance of being a colourful warzone.

Stories Associated with Vishwakarma Jayanti
There are several stories related to the birth of Lord Vishwakarma. It is said that Lord Brahma’s son Dharma had seven sons. Among them, the name of the seventh son was Vastu. Vastu had a son named Vishwakarma. According to another belief, it is mentioned in the Skanda Purana that Prabhas, the eighth son of Dharma Rishi, was married to Bhuvana Brahmavadini, the sister of Guru Brihaspati. Brahmavadini was the mother of Vishwakarma. In this way, there are many stories about the birth of Lord Vishwakarma in various regions.
