Mythological Legend Behind Parshuram Jayanti

It is believed that Parshuram is immortal. He was born in the Bhrigu clan, and therefore, possessed the qualities of both brahmin and Kshatriyas. Parshuram was half Brahmin and half Kshatriya. It is said that Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Parashuram to end the evil deeds of cruel rulers on earth and establish Dharma.

According to Hindu mythology, the legend behind Parshuram Jayanti goes as follows:

Lord Parshuram was born to Sage Jamadagni and his wife Renuka. Jamadagni was a great sage and was known for his devotion to Lord Shiva. Renuka was a devoted wife and a dedicated mother.

One day, a king named Kartavirya Arjuna visited Jamadagni’s ashram and was impressed by the sage’s hospitality. He was particularly enamoured with the cow, Nandini, who could provide unlimited milk. He demanded that the cow be given to him, but Jamadagni refused, citing the cow’s importance to his religious practices. Infuriated, Kartavirya Arjuna and his army attacked the ashram and killed Jamadagni.

Upon learning of his father’s death, Lord Parshuram swore to avenge his father’s murder and set out on a mission to rid the world of all tyrannical and oppressive rulers. He waged a war against the corrupt rulers and restored dharma on earth. He is also believed to have established many ashrams and spread knowledge and spiritual teachings to Devotees.

Another popular legend says that the state of Kerala was formed when Parashuram threw his axe into the sea.

This day is also a highly auspicious day as Akshaya Tritiya is observed on this day. Treta Yuga also began on this day.
