Fasting Story of Hartalika Teej

Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were reunited on the day of Hartalika Teej. According to the legend, the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha (story) was narrated by Lord Shiva to Mata Parvati. In this story, Lord Shiva reminded Mata Parvati of her previous birth. He narrated that Mata Parvati took birth 107 times to get Lord Shiva as her husband and after taking birth in the house of Parvat Raj Himalaya for the 108th time, her wish was fulfilled. Mata Parvati was doing severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with this austerity and had sent his desire to Parvati’s father Parvat Raj Himalaya, that he wanted to tie the knot with Parvati. But Mata Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva, so her friends kidnapped her and took her away to the forest and where she again engrossed herself in hard penance. This fast is called ‘Hartalika’ because the friends of Mata Parvati abducted her from her father’s kingdom and took her to a forest. ‘Harit’ means to abduct and ‘Talika’ means friend. Lord Shiva was finally pleased with Mata Parvati’s devotion and accepted her as his wife.
